"The purpose of this initiative, which was launched in August 2006, is to coordinate flamingo activities at a regional level in the Caribbean. Local conservationists in some flamingo range countries (e.g., Cuba, Venezuela, and Mexico) have been carrying out long-term research, management, and conservation activities, but there are gaps in basic population and habitat status in other areas. Additionally, because individual flamingos range over several countries, localized initiatives need to be networked and integrated into a regional vision of ecological research and conservation." Website (various languages): www.flamingoatlas.org

The Mediterranean and West African Greater Flamingo Network was established in March 2002 following the 2nd Mediterranean Greater Flamingo Workshop (4-6 March 2002, Tour du Valat) to allow for more effective information sharing between researchers.

In late 2002, the network developed a common database for ring reading data from France, Spain and Italy. In 2003, the network was extended to Mauritania and Turkey, and following the 3rd International Workshop on Greater Flamingos in the Mediterranean Region and North-west Africa (26 November 2004, Tunisia), the network was extended to Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.

The network launched a website (www.flamingoatlas.org) in 2006 to provide a platform for coordinating activities. The goal of the network is to coordinate research aimed at understanding the mechanisms governing the dynamics of the Mediterranean-West African subpopulation of Greater Flamingos in order to develop an effective conservation programme.

The goal of the network is "to achieve sustainable and integrated management of the High-Andean wetlands and associated ecosystems of importance for the conservation of High-Andean flamingos, through the establishment of a regional network of priority sites, focused on High-Andean wetlands but also including lowland key sites. The long-term project will include sites in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru."
